Another Record Quarter for High-Speed Internet
Over 28,000 Additional Broadband Subscribers per Day in the First Quarter of 2005
Durham, NH – May 10, 2005 – Leichtman Research Group, Inc. (LRG) found that the twenty largest cable and DSL providers in the US –- representing about 95% of the market – acquired a record 2.6 million net additional subscribers in the first quarter of 2005. The top broadband providers now account for over 35.8 million high-speed Internet subscribers -- with cable having over 21.1 million broadband subscribers, and DSL having over 14.7 million subscribers.
Other key findings for the quarter include:
- The top DSL providers added a record 1.38 million subscribers -- representing 54% of the net broadband additions for the quarter versus cable, which added 1.2 million subscribers
- The top three DSL providers (SBC, Verizon and Bell South) each had record quarters for net additions
- The top cable broadband providers maintain a 6.4 million subscriber advantage over DSL and have a 59% share of the total market versus DSL
“Deeply discounted introductory offers again drove a surge in broadband adoption in the first quarter of 2005,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. “In the past six months, nearly five million subscribers have added broadband service in the US.”
