Broadband Internet to Grow by 25 Million Subscribers in the Next Five Years
Study Highlights Aggressive Consumer Adoption Curve Fueling Broadband Growth
Durham, NH – June 24, 2002 - The number of broadband Internet subscribers in the United States will continue to grow from a customer base of approximately 12.5 million at the end of the first quarter of 2002 to 37.3 million in 2007 - click here for graphic. This forecast is part of an upcoming research report, “Broadband Internet Growth: On-Target,” from Leichtman Research Group, Inc.
Based on comprehensive industry data and surveys of over 1,000 households throughout the United States, the report examines the current consumer adoption of cable modem and DSL Internet access, and evaluates the implications and factors driving future growth.
Key findings include:
- Availability - The top nine cable operators, collectively representing over 90% of cable subscribers in the US, report broadband Internet availability for 75% of homes passed by their systems;
- Price Sensitivity - Over twice as many consumers say that they are likely to subscribe to broadband Internet service at $30 per month as are at $45 per month;
- Broadband Penetration - Today about one-quarter of all US Internet households subscribe to broadband, by 2007 broadband will represent one-half of all online households.
“Unrealistic expectations have led some to be disappointed with the growth of broadband,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. “The reality is that higher-priced broadband Internet services have followed an aggressive consumer adoption curve, and will continue healthy growth over the next several years.”
