About 580,000 Add Broadband in the Third Quarter of 2012
80.7 Million Get Broadband from Top Cable and Telephone Companies
Durham, NH -- November 14, 2012 -- Leichtman Research Group, Inc. (LRG) found that the seventeen largest cable and telephone providers in the US -- representing about 93% of the market -- acquired about 580,000 net additional high-speed Internet subscribers in the third quarter of 2012. These top broadband providers now account for over 80.7 million subscribers -- with cable companies having 46.2 million broadband subscribers, and telephone companies having 34.5 million subscribers.
Other broadband findings for the quarter include:
- Overall, broadband additions in 3Q 2012 amounted to 92% of those in 3Q 2011
- The top cable companies added about 575,000 subscribers, representing 110% as many additions as in 3Q 2011
- The top telephone companies added about 5,000 subscribers -- compared to a gain of about 108,000 in 3Q 2011
- Comcast added 287,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter -- nearly 50% of the total for the top providers
- AT&T and Verizon added 749,000 fiber subscribers (via U-verse and FiOS) in the quarter, while having a net loss of 799,000 DSL subscribers
"While top cable and telephone companies now account for over 80 million broadband subscribers, the industry continues to grow at a modest pace," said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. "Over the first three quarters of 2012, the top broadband providers added over 2.1 million subscribers, compared to nearly 2.3 million subscribers added in the first three quarters of 2011."
